Ok you know that I love The Vampire Diaries. There was this one time, when I first got Netflix (possibly the reason that I got Netflix) that I spent 3 1/2 weeks watching the first 4 seasons (that’s just shy of 90 episodes or about 80 hours of screen time). Binge watching TV at it’s best, and it didn’t even take the 2-4 episodes that Netflix claims is what’s needed to get hooked.
No, it was pretty much love at first sight, and I’m not talking about Nina Dobrev’s (Elena) hair. I’m talking about Damon Salvatore. He is the one character that we can’t help—against our better judgement—falling in love with. Here are 10 reasons why:
He’s so bad that he’s good. Damon might be even badder than the worst bad boys I loved in high school, but he does it so well I can’t help falling for his lines. He makes me feel that if he loves me enough he won’t hurt me. And I believe it.
He has a heart of gold. Damon isn’t a terrible person at his core. He’s the perfect example of good boy gone bad and defies this most common of romance tropes: the bad boy who will be saved by the right woman. I think Damon will take it one step further and be saved by his own good deeds. It’s obvious he’s a sensitive man who has been hurt too many times so he fights against creating his own happiness. But he’s sweet. By season 6 his cold vampire core has pretty much melted. Methinks he needs to hug it out with me—in a bubble bath.
He’s fun. Damon knows how to have a good time. I’m pretty sure that he could take me on the best vintage car, whiskey-laden, sexy ride of my life. And he’s so much less boring than Stefan. So much. I’m in and you can come if you want. But you have to sit in the back seat.
I mean look at him. That smirk, those smoldering eyes, the hair. The body. Boring Stefan is way too skinny. Like my man should wear at least one jeans size larger than me. Maybe the years when Damon had his humanity turned off was the right diet after all. No woman (not even tiny little me) wants to feel like she could crush her hot vampire when things get a little cray cray.
127 years of experience. Boy looks like he knows his way around a California King (sofa, floor, kitchen counter, backseat). Sure, he’s had many years of practice, but still, not everyone has that kind of innate talent. You can’t learn what he knows how to do naturally.
He’s loyal to a fault. Damon may blow like the wind and lose perspective, but when he’s yours, he’s yours. That’s an admirable quality in anyone, even when it’s self-defeating. The way he took care of the sheriff when she was dying? Let’s just say I wouldn’t mind having him carry me to my deathbed. I know that’s a morbid thought, but hey…vampire show?
He’s got a sense of humor. Not only does he possess a spirited wit (thanks to the writer’s room, I’m sure) but he delivers his one-liners with aplomb. Even better, he can laugh at himself without reserve. How many people who are that good looking can do that?
He’s good at his job. As far as being a vampire goes, Damon is an A1 rockstar. He runs fast, kills cleanly, and knows when to stop. Yes, we know that Stefan usually takes care of the new baby vamps, but that’s because he’s a push-over. The older brother really is the one who has it going on.
He’s not just a pretty face. If you haven’t noticed, Damon is the smarter brother. Most of the best mysteries have been solved by our tall, dark and handsome. Who found where the werewolves were hiding out? Who marked the atlas so Bonnie would go to Nova Scotia? Who is the one that continually finagles his way out of sticky situations? The brains behind the operation, that’s who.
We can’t help ourselves. Above all, Damon Salvatore is irresistible. Even though I’ve spent hours (and hours and hours) on the task, I just can’t put my finger on why his special version of je ne sais quoi is so appealing. But don’t worry, I’ll keep trying to figure it out. Yes, I know it’s a hard job but someone has to do it.
Editor’s note: No, I am not a teenaged girl. I’m a 47 year old woman with an obvious affinity to what my children fondly call teenager shows.
