Latkes Activate: Fun Chanukah TV and Videos to Get You in the Holiday Spirit

Latkes Activate: TV and Videos to Get you in the Chanukah Spirit

It’s the first night Chanukah (or however you spell it like Hanukkah, Hanukah, Chanukkah). It’s time to light the candles, fry the latkes, and spin some dreidels.

It’s also time to hunt down some great Chanukah viewing. Because you know me, if it’s not on TV then it didn’t happen. When I was growing up there was nothing. It was all Christmas, all the time. Confusing. But we made our own traditions (read: What Jews do at Christmas-time).

There really aren’t that many movies or TV shows that feature our beloved Festival of Lights. Even though half of Hollywood is Jewish (scroll down to the first video below if you don’t believe me), I guess Chanukah movies are just not where it’s at in December. But I did do a bit of poking about on Netflix and found 1 movie and 3 episodes of some of my favourite shows that might get you into the Chanukah spirit.

If you’re thinking this is slim pickings, it is. There’s a reason my nephew keeps asking why Santa isn’t coming to his house.

Quality over quantity. That’s what I keep repeating to myself. And there’s definitely some good watching here.

Little Fockers

Little Fockers - movies with Chanukah in themWe can’t help love the Fockers. They’re cringe-inducing and hilarious at the same time—sort of like all family holiday celebrations. Ben Stiller really has no shame, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. In this installment, the Fockers have been married for 10 years and and Greg (Stiller) continues solidify his place in the family. His uptight father-in-law Jack has admitted him into the circle of trust but when Greg starts moonlighting with a drug company, Jack begins to doubt him. The family gets together for the twins’ birthday party and of course misunderstandings ensue. We close off with a festive celebration of Chrismukkah.

Friends the Chanukah ArmadilloFriends “The One With the Holiday Armadillo” (Season 7 Episode 10)

What happens when Ross wants to teach his son Ben about Chanukah? Well, a lot. I forgot about this episode and now I want to watch it over and over.

Grey’s Anatomy “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” (Season 2, Episode 12)

Burke and Yang argue about a boy who doesn’t want a heart transplant. And the group sings Chanukah carols. It’s a stretch, holiday-wise, but I’ll take it.

Glee-chanukahGlee, “Glee Actually” (Season 4, Episode 10)

Do you remember when Brittany and Sam thought there would be a Mayan Apocalypse? They brought blonde to a new level and while Kurt had a Christmas he’ll never forget, Puck and Jake sang a special rendition of ‘Oh Hanukkah’.

Need a quick fix? I found these 3 Chanukah videos to light a fire under your funny bone.

Adam Sandler’s Chanukah Song, Version 4. Because you know versions 1, 2, & 3 didn’t do the trick

2. Country Singer Jake Owen’s The Worst Chanukah Album Ever. Because we needed this.

3. The new classic, MC Flow’s Pot Latkes. Because, come ON!
