Life has changed a lot lately. Now that I’m a single mother, I’ve got to maximize every single minute of my life. In the last couple of months a new morning task had been added to my routine: getting my youngest off to school in the morning. In the days I like to call ‘before’, his father would drop him to the high school on his way to work. Now, the task of getting him up (teenagers!), out the door, and in the car, has fallen to me.
I’ve been looking for ways to make my morning routine more efficient and make the most of every minute.
To begin with, I’ve started getting up about 90 minutes earlier in the morning. That is an adjustment. I am NOT a morning person. But waking at 6:30 am means that I’ve got a lot more time to play with.
I’ve also figured out that the best time to have my pre-workout breakfast is in the car en route. Of course, that means it’s gotta be portable and obviously does not require any utensils.
Especially when I’m boxing or doing Crossfit, a banana just doesn’t cut it. So, smoothies it is. My criteria – delicious, not-boring and very nutritious. I need energy to get me through the day.
High-protein, good fats, natural and great tasting. I could go with an easy ready-made shake mix, for sure. But that just doesn’t do it for me. I want to take a simple smoothie and make it better. Upgrade it if you will.
You know where I find endless inspiration? In a jar of Kraft All Natural Smooth Peanut Butter. Mmmmm.. You know, peanut butter goes with pretty much everything, and it’s the perfect addition to my pre-workout breakfast and to my son’s before school breakfast. Especially when it’s a Chocolate PB & J Protein Smoothie.
As soon as my son takes one look at what I’ve got, he wants one too. Mother and son who slurp together, stay together, right? The best part? If I can get him up early enough, he can make ME breakfast.
Really, anyone can make this—Moms, Dads, kids of any age, Grandmas and Grandpas too. Feel free to customize it with your fave fruits and yogurt.
Make Together. Stick Together. Power up for a great day!
Note: I use a Blendtec to make this smoothie. If you don’t have one, I’d recommend a magic bullet or other powerful blender to make sure the chia seeds get ground up. If you don’t have access to one, I’d leave out the chia or buy ground chia.
