Kids! I’ve got your balls!
How often do you get to yell that? But seriously, I do. Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Balls. Mmmm..
Are you drooling?
Here’s the background. My daughter, who I love to pieces, of course, is the WORST EATER. In fact, her Instagram handle for a while was SkyLikesCake. Guess why. And it’s not because she likes vegetables.
Cake is good, I’ll give you that. But it’s not the ideal power food for breakfast, lunch, or everyday afternoon snacks (maybe on Sundays it’s the ticket. Or your birthday. Or your bestie’s birthday). Cake is delightful as a treat. But contrary to popular belief, it is not a food group.
My aforementioned daughter would disagree. Because, you know… Sky Likes Cake.
The problem is, she hasn’t been feeling that well for a while—tired, run down, light-headed, low energy. So I sent her off to the doctor.
Lo and behold, Sky might like cake, but it doesn’t like her.
We found out that she suffers from Hypoglycemia, otherwise known as low blood sugar. To beat it, and not feel crappy, she has to eat high nutrition foods very frequently throughout the day. The key to making this happen is to make sure that there is healthy food handy for her and that’s easily portable, or she might just skip eating or grab whatever’s around.
I did a little research and I came up with the idea of protein balls as a homemade, portable snack. They’re delicious, and high in protein, good carbs and healthy fats. Protein balls are also the perfect choice to fuel a body and keep anyone’s blood sugar even stevens while on the go.
In order to bring her over to the bright side, I started with one of her number one candy treats: Peanut Butter Cups. Seriously, peanut butter makes everything better, and Kraft All Natural Smooth Peanut Butter is one of my go-to ingredients- it’s so versatile. You’d be surprised to see how much inspiration is found from just one jar. I added chocolate protein powder, banana, chia (my fave superfood), and some semi-sweet chocolate chips for good luck.
You have to make these. Or better yet, get your kids to make them. It’s no-cook. You don’t even need a blender. Just a bowl and a spoon.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Protein Balls
2 large bananas
2 cups Kraft All Natural Smooth Peanut Butter
2 handfuls of chia seeds
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
2 handfuls of mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
Hemp hearts (optional)
What You Do:
In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork or potato masher. Add the peanut butter, chia seed, and protein powder and mix well. Add the chocolate chips and fold together.
Chill mixture for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Wet your hands and using a spoon, scoop up the mixture. Roll into balls approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter. If desired, roll in hemp hearts for extra crunch. Refrigerate in a container until ready to eat.
Makes a lot.
